The
Ornithological Society of Polynesia - "Manu" - is a non-profit association
and non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in July 1990 by a few enthusiastic
amateur birdwatchers in French Polynesia.
"Manu" is
the affiliate for French Polynesia of "BirdLife International",
a global alliance of bird conservation organisations working in more than 100
countries who, together, are the leading authority on the status of birds, their
habitats and the issues and problems affecting bird life.
"Manu" is member of the Federation of Nature Protection Associations "Te Ora Naho".
"Manu" has been
recognized as a general interest association by the government of French Polynesia
in decree N° 1023/CM (July 21th,
1999).
The Ornithological Society
of Polynesia, "Manu" has received the agreement of the High-Commissioner
under article L. 621-1 of the "code de l'environnement" by decree
n°1011/DRCL (June 20th, 2003).
To
protect Polynesian birds and their habitats;
To contribute to the
study of Polynesian birds in their natural environment;
To develop and promote
information on the Polynesian birds and their conservation.
Contacts
with international scientific organisms;
Participation to meetings
and conferences;
Organisation and involvement
in all events dealing with birds;
Conclude agreements
with administrations and authorities;
Build and manage data
banks on Polynesian birds.
The
Ornithological Society of Polynesia is managed by a Council elected for two
years by the members during the General Assembly.
The functions of the
Council members are gratuitous.

The
council's members of the Ornithological Society of Polynesia have a meeting
every first the wednesday of the month at 16:30;
Publication of the
Bulletin "Te Manu" (4 issues
per year) for the members;
Involvement in educational
and promotional events (Day of Environment, Conferences, Radio, TV programs)
to raise public awareness;
Field trips (birdwatching,
tape recording, photos or video...) and logistic support to ornithological missions
in French Polynesia;
Proposals of conservation
programs, financing and implement protection
programs on endangered species.
